Capture the visible structure
Photograph the whole mushroom in place and use a second safe viewpoint for the cap and stem. Record habitat, date and location separately. A cropped cap image can hide features needed by a qualified local identifier.
Distinguish observations from identity
The analysis describes pits, ridges, folds and visible cap-to-stem attachment. It may discuss Morchella and morel-like groups, including Gyromitra or Verpa where relevant. A single trait, including an apparently hollow interior, is not a safety test.
Do not turn a visual match into a food decision
A photo cannot establish that a mushroom is safe to eat. Toxic lookalikes exist, and illnesses have also been associated with mushrooms identified as true morels. No preparation, cooking or tasting advice is provided here.
Use the right kind of expert help
For identification, consult a qualified local mycologist who can assess the specimen and habitat. If someone has eaten an unknown mushroom, contact a poison center promptly rather than waiting for this tool. In the United States, call 1-800-222-1222; use local emergency services for severe symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this confirm that a morel is edible?
No. Neither the photo result nor any individual visual trait establishes edibility.
Does a hollow stem prove it is a true morel?
No. Isolated features and photographs can be misleading and do not establish food safety.
Will it identify false morels?
It can suggest lookalike groups when visible features support them. Treat every candidate as unconfirmed.
What should I do after an accidental ingestion?
Contact your local poison center promptly. In the US, call 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for an online identification; call emergency services for severe symptoms.
