Poisonous Mushroom Pre-Check: Warning Features and Next Steps

Record visible features and get a safety-first next step. This tool never identifies a mushroom as safe or edible, even when no listed warning feature is present. If someone may have swallowed a wild mushroom, contact a poison service now; identification should not delay help.

Check the situation and visible features

If a person may have swallowed a wild mushroom, contact Poison Control now: 1-800-222-1222 in the US. Elsewhere contact your local poison service. Do not wait for symptoms. For a pet, call a veterinarian. This checklist never establishes edibility.

Choose what you actually observed. “Cannot tell” is a valid answer. Your answers stay in this browser.

1. Could a person or pet have swallowed any?
2. Can you see a cup or sac around the stem base?

Use existing photos. A cropped or buried base means you cannot tell.

3. What can you see under the cap?
4. Is there a skirt-like ring on the stem?

Your observations and next steps will appear here.

Possible ingestion comes first

For a person in the US, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 after possible wild mushroom ingestion. Outside the US, contact the local poison service. For a pet, contact a veterinarian. Do not wait for symptoms or for an app to identify the mushroom.

What the checklist records

The questions cover a cup-like structure at the stem base, pale gills and a ring on the stem. These observations may help an expert, but none alone proves toxicity. A cropped, damaged or buried part must be recorded as unknown.

No warning features is not a safety result

Dangerous species can lack the listed features, and harmless species can share them. This tool does not turn absence of a flag into a green light. Do not taste or eat a mushroom to test it, and do not serve it based on a photo match.

Prepare evidence for a local specialist

Keep existing photos of the cap, underside, entire stem and base, together with the location and habitat. A local mycologist or extension service may help identify the specimen. If ingestion is possible, make the call first rather than delaying to gather pictures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this tell me a mushroom is edible?

No. Every path leaves edibility undetermined. The absence of warning features is not evidence of safety.

What if someone ate some but feels fine?

Contact Poison Control now in the US at 1-800-222-1222, or your local poison service elsewhere. Do not wait for symptoms.

What should I do for a pet?

Call a veterinarian or animal poison service after possible ingestion. A human poison-service number is not a substitute for veterinary advice.

Do white gills prove that a mushroom is poisonous?

No. A visible feature is an observation, not a toxin test. Expert identification is required, and a photo tool cannot clear a mushroom for eating.
