Visible clues the tool compares

  • Bracket, shelf, cluster or cap shape
  • Visible underside: pores, gills or teeth
  • Attachment and growth pattern
  • Living trunk, dead wood or stump context when evident

Include the tree or log context

A close-up helps show texture, while a wider view can show how the fungus is attached. Do not assume the host tree species from bark alone. If the image does not show whether the wood is living or dead, keep that unresolved.

Photograph the underside without damaging the fungus

An underside view can distinguish features hidden in a top view. Use an accessible angle without cutting, tasting or climbing. A photo from one surface may support only a broad group.

Compare bracket and clustered lookalikes

Different fungi can share shelf shapes, colours or clustered growth. The tool links its suggestions to visible details and should stop short of a species when those details cannot separate candidates.

Keep food and tree-risk decisions separate

A photo shortlist does not establish edibility or diagnose whether a tree is structurally safe. Consult a qualified local mushroom expert for identification and an arborist for concerns about a standing tree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a fungus photo tell me if a tree will fall?

No. Structural tree risk requires an on-site assessment. This tool only compares visible fungal features and cannot determine hidden decay or stability.

What happens if the image is unclear?

The result should explain what is missing and suggest a better view. A broad shortlist or an inconclusive result is appropriate when the photo cannot separate lookalikes.

Do I need to use a camera?

No. Choose an existing photo from your device. The tool uses the photo you select and does not require a live camera feed.

Is this photo check free?

A limited daily allowance is available through the web tool. The upload flow shows an allowance or limit message; this is separate from the mobile app.
